How to Play
1. Start a new game of Pirates Mahjong to begin your adventure.2. Identify 'free' tiles. Okay, this game is seriously charming! The pirate theme is so well done, from the gold coin tiles to the treasure chest animations when you clear a board. The backgrounds are lush and make you feel like you're really on a tropical island or a pirate ship. It's a great twist on classic Mahjong and the visual style really pulls you in. Makes it super relaxing to play after a long day. Definitely one of the better-looking Mahjong games out there.
Pirates Mahjong is a solid mahjong game. The core mechanics are what you'd expect, matching tiles to clear the board. It's pretty intuitive, and the touch controls on my tablet are smooth enough. My only minor gripe is that sometimes the tiles can be a bit small on my phone screen, making it hard to distinguish some of the similar pirate symbols, especially if I'm playing quickly. But overall, it's a good time sink and the puzzles are generally fair and engaging.
I wanted to love this, but some levels are just unfairly difficult. I'm usually pretty good at Mahjong, but I hit a wall around level 30 or so. There are times when it feels like there are no moves left almost immediately, or you get stuck with only a couple of pairs that are blocked. It's frustrating when you just want to relax and instead you're restarting the same board five times. A few more hints or a 'shuffle' option wouldn't go amiss on those tougher levels.
